Classical Pilates at Root

A place to move, eat and stay a while.

Root is a movement studio and cafe in New Mill, Holmfirth. The studio and the cafe share a building and a philosophy: do it properly, keep it personal, make people feel genuinely welcome.

Contemporary. Progressive. Welcoming to all.

What Root is for

Root exists for people who want to move well and eat well without it becoming a project or a performance. The classes are small and taught properly. The food is made here. People tend to stay longer than they planned, which is usually a good sign.

The studio and the cafe are genuinely connected — not as a marketing idea, but because that is what the building is for. Movement and food and conversation, in the same place, without one being an afterthought of the other.

We are not trying to optimise you. We are not going to sell you a supplement stack or tell you your morning routine needs an overhaul. You come in, you work, you sit down, you eat something good. That is the whole thing.

Mavra

Mavra is a Comprehensive Pilates Instructor, Somatic Coach, Focusing Professional and Non-Linear Movement Method practitioner. She has been teaching movement for over a decade, drawing on a range of disciplines that include Pilates, somatics, relationship coaching and body-centred self-inquiry.

Her own path began 14 years ago with a period of genuine difficulty that prompted a sustained journey inward. Over the years she explored many methods and modalities — some life-changing, some detours — and traces the shape of what she now teaches back through all of it.

She keeps classes small and teaching personal. She would rather work with eight people properly than sixteen people adequately. That instinct shapes everything at Studio Root: class sizes, session structure, the relationship between teacher and student.

She is currently retraining in classical Pilates — the system as Joseph Pilates originally created it — because depth matters more to her than trend. Her modern training took over two years and was followed by continued education under teachers she deeply respects. She is adding to that foundation, not replacing it.

The cafe

The cafe sits beside the studio rather than behind it. Everything on the menu is made at Root: sourdough baked in-house, eggs properly poached, coffee taken seriously.

It is the kind of place where you come in for a post-class flat white and find yourself still there an hour later. The community that has formed around Root tends to happen here — gradually, over shared tables, between people who recognise each other from Tuesday's class.
